Bridal Shower + Black Bean Story

This past weekend I went home for the bridal shower of a childhood friend.  First thought: Argh! (yes, like a pirate :)) The food -- Don't fall into the food trap!  Well, I usually tell that voice that I it needs to shut it, but I tried to be smart this time.  TRIED.

I woke up early for a Saturday and hit the gym for some treadmill time and circuit/strength training. I walked 29 mins with a 2 min cool down. I wanted to walk a shorter time, but touch screen wouldn't listen to me, so I just made it to 29.  I lifted 5,980 pounds through 12 reps each at 8 machines.  I made it home just in time to take a shower and throw some things in a bag!  We stopped at McDonalds on the way to my hometown.  I got a grilled chicken club sandwich, minus tomato, add red onion.  Honestly, the bacon was calling my name!  I should have said no mayo and no cheese.  They always put a horrific amount of mayo on their sandwiches and I don't really care for cheese most of the time.  I brought along some of my 1/2 of potato salad too.  At this point, an hour after my workout, I had nothing to drink.  Sometimes I wonder if my mistakes are rookie mistakes or idiot mistakes.  The jury's still out on this one!  When we got to the bridal shower 2.25 hours later, we played some games, celebrated the bride, and then it was on for some food.  I hung out with SwimTot while most of the ladies got their food.

I entered their kitchen last and found chicken salad croissants and veggie pizza with cream cheese.  Not thinking, I grabbed one of each.  Plus two chocolate covered strawberries, a few crackers, and a tiny bit of an AMAZING cheese ball (some white cheese with basil and bacon).  And of course there was bridal/baby shower punch.  You know, the punch where you mix sherbert and sprite.  Always a crowd pleaser.

They also had cupcakes with the wedding colors - White and blue.  Like a very blue blue.  The brightness of the icing stains you tongue and possibly teeth!  So I stayed away from those.  However, I HAD to have my very favorite pastel mint candies.  My biggest love of sweets is something chocolate/sweet/minty with a crunch.  These babies were right next to the assorted nuts, so I got some of each--and seconds of nuts and pastel mints.  Want me to come to your party?  Serve pastel mints!

I loaded up my plate and quickly noticed that there was a problem with me eating all this (mostly) wonderful food -- I was full!  What?  Who is this Em and what have you done to the real one who can down as much food - and more - than humanly possible?  I happily ditched most of the food asap, ate a few more pastel mints, and sucked down about 4 bridal shower punches because I had not had anything to drink all day!  Yeah, not smart, but they did not have bottled water and I know they have well water -- I have turned into a city girl for sure!

Overall, I wasn't perfect, but better than I would have been in the past.  That's what I'm aiming for!  Continual improvement and a heightened  awareness of body and mind concerning food.

Black Bean Story:
I have not been a big fan of beans my whole life.  (except the green variety hehe)  When my parents made chili or ham and beans (gag me!) I would eat something else or pick out the beans, which didn't leave me left.  When I was in college, I would go to the fast food-ish part of the dining hall to grab something when I was short on time.  I often got chicken quesadillas.  Just chicken, cheese, and a tortilla.  Well, sometimes things get mixed together when they are in close proximity (think a subway assembly line set up) I got a black bean or two in my quesadilla. Wow, not bad, I thought.  The next time I was in a hurry, I got black beans on my quesadilla.  I grabbed my food and headed over to a bible study that I was leading.  I ate my food as we chatted about God and life.  Then -- Uh Oh!  A terrible rumbling noise from my innards!  Pain, pain, pain!  Ok Em, I thought, you can make it through, only X amount of minutes!  There was no real escaping to the bathroom -- the dorm only had suites with shared bathrooms.  After the bible study was over, the girls wanted to talk, but I abruptly cut them off and told them I had to leave!  I high tailed it down to the lobby and rushed into the single person bathroom.  RELIEF.  And a continued hatred for black beans!  I still feel bad about blowing the girls in the bible study off, but really there was nothing I could do!

Eventually, I have added black beans into my diet, incorporated into Mexican fare.  Yesterday I ate some black beans, chicken and cheese as a snack and almost had the same experience as above!  Should have taken beano -- haha!

Victories:

I have lost 2 pounds!  I'm at 273.  I'm REALLY happy with this.  I'm not expecting the weight to fall off in a certain amount of time.  Right now, I am TRULY happy with focusing on my fitness and seeing my weight drop is such a bonus!

My endurance is building.  Don't get me wrong, I am not able to run a mile without stopping, but I am improving!  I swam 2200 yards tonight and I hated it because it was hard, but loved it because it was challenging!

And I am stepping out of my comfort zone!  If I cannot have a lane to myself, I try to get a lane with someone who swims at a similar speed.  I got in a lane with a girl who is a few years younger than me (and several sizes smaller! lol)  She had started her workout before me and ended before me as well.  She was swimming off of an endurance training chart.  Normally, I would be very introverted and just keep swimming and ignore her (aka this is why I have a hard time making new friends!).  I asked her what she was training for (an open water swim) and we chatted for a few mins.  Proud of myself and I hope to swim with her again!

Now I'm off to do a face plant into my pillow!  Strength training circuit + 2200 yards of swimming in an hour = wiped out!

Best Exercise Week Thus Far!

You know you always look at thin celebrities and think "I could do that if I had a personal trainer"  or "I could look like that if I didn't work for months at a time".  Well folks, my 3 days off of work sort of put that into perspective.  Wow, what I could do when I wasn't working!  So much more energy to work out!  Let me market that into a weight loss route:  Lose weight fast!  Quit your job, have someone watch your kids, sleep late, workout, eat (somewhat) well.  I'll be a millionaire in no time!

But in all seriousness, working out has been going really well!  Here is what I have done in the past...9 days:

Sunday (4/29): 50 minute walk while pushing toddler in stroller
Monday: 50 min swim, 2250 yds.
Tuesday: Appt w/wellness coach.  Circuit/Strength training and 16 min/1 mile walk/run (with 6:29 mins of actual running)
Wednesday: 25 min walk on treadmill, circuit/strength training.
Thursday: 1 hr swim, 2100 yds.
Friday: Work from 8am-10:15pm (job + babysitting).  No workout other than toddler snuggles.
Saturday: 31 min walk on treadmill, circuit/strength training.
Sunday (5/6): 1.5 hrs of "doubles tennis" with sisters and dad.
Monday: 23 min walk on treadmill, circuit/strength training, 16 min/1 mile walk/run (with 7:01 mins of actual running!)

Something like 369 mins of activity, not counting circuit/strength.  That's so fabulous for me!  This was one of my goals in my wellness appointment, to make working out a part of my life.  So far, so good!

I want to listen to my body and rest when it tells me to.  And be more active when it tells me to, too!  This evening I felt quit energized after the treadmill and circuit/strength.  I had been feeling slightly off at some points in the workout, but told myself to listen up!  Go hard when it felt good, slow down when it didn't.

I hadn't played tennis in many years.  High school gym class?  There was an obvious reason I stuck to swimming -- not much coordination with the racket and the ball!  I felt like i was chasing down A LOT of balls (good exercise!).  Near the end we joked that we were not only playing on court 8, but also 7 and 9.  Highlights (for me) included my improvement on my back hand, keeping the ball alive till we got it over the net (this is where playing on other courts factored in!), and also not being aware of my surroundings, chasing a ball, successfully hitting it, and then striking a light pole all in one swift movement.  Yep, got the attention of all the tennis players there, lol!

Venus and Serena before the match (SwimSis and me!)
Sweaty and muscley after my workout/run tonight!

All Good Things

Must come to an end.

This could be bad news, but it's not!  I had been enjoying my indefinite vacation this week when I got a call.  The guy who they hired for the job I was temping "did not work out".  So I'm going back tomorrow for 4-8 weeks!  haha the 3 days that I have not been there were wonderful.  Full of relaxing, working out, and hanging with friends!  Although it is quite weird that I just said goodbye to everyone last Friday!

In the meantime, I spent too much money for my own good!  I got some new clothes and am very happy about them.  Always love find work pants that are less than $20, and when they need to be hemmed, it isn't a big deal or budget breaker!  My fave pair of work pants were about 6 inches too long.  I got them for $6 because people generally don't buy pants that need to be hemmed.  They are pretty much perfect otherwise.  Ooh and I got a dress!  I RARELY get dresses.  I only have 2 other dresses -- one from my sister's bachelorette party and one from her wedding! :)  It is a rare find to grab a dress that can tame my boobs and not make my stomach look pregnant or just generally terrible.

I decided to put my bento box idea on hold for now.  I got something else instead!
NEW WORKOUT PANTS!
 [found it here]
I'll be honest.  My other "workout pants" which are yoga pants from target, involve me pulling them up about every 5 steps if I am walking/running.  I have the problem of a big stomach and that makes my pants go south (big stomach combined with no butt!) and my shirts go north.  So, I desperately needed something that I wouldn't have to worry about.  I wanted to take a pic of them on me, but felt embarrassed to ask the Coach, so I asked SwimTot.  Oh yes, photography by a 4 year old:

Obviously those did not work super well, so I had to go to my old method:  Balance my size 11.5s on the edge of the tub and get a shot in the bathroom mirror:

Okay, maybe her pics were better - haha!  I walked for 1/2 hour on the treadmill and did my strength training in these and they were great!  The only bad part was when I was doing hip adduction and abduction and they seemed to fit funny in the crotch at that moment.  But if that was the worst thing, then I will take it!

When I came home, I had a delicious taco salad with a little spanish rice and potato salad.  I only had potato salad because I was excited that it was 1/2 off.  I did have to put more mustard on it (which is what looks like a piece of macaroni)  just not tangy enough!

Today I wore this shirt because of my friend Erin who had thyroid surgery.  She has these v neck tees from Target in every color!  Her surgery took 7 hours (4 hours was planned) and she ended up losing 1/3 of her blood!  She had to have a blood transfusion this morning, so please pray for her if you are the praying kind!

Swimsuits in the sink!
I swam 2100 yards today after I dropped SwimTot off at preschool  Took me an hour.  It wasn't my favorite workout, it was hard, but good.  The main set involved sprints with longer rests after them.  Here was the workout to my best knowledge:

3 x 150 yds on 2:30, 2:20, 2:10 (I'm pretty sure I added a minute to each of those times!)
200 IM pull
4 x 75 kick on 1:15
4 x 25 - 15 yds fast

1 x 50 butterfly kick on back, focus on kicking underwater from wall (I later changed to 2 x 50)
4 x 25 FAST on 1:00
1 x 50 free, easy on 1:30
TIMES 4

100 Individual Medley (I.M.)
100 Cool Down choice

I may not have gotten the yardage right.  I always have a hard time counting my yards when I am swimming!

That makes 5 workout days in a row!  Go me!  I am taking a "rest" day tomorrow because I am going to work them watch my fave lil man.

My Wellness Appointment!

Things went so WELL (bahaha I <3 puns!) this morning!  Karen was indeed a wonderful lady.  Around 50ish, enthusiastic, motivating and accommodating.  She didn't even seem to notice the nice bloody knee I had from shaving beforehand in the Y shower! (SwimTot had to be at the Y preschool and 9, my appt was at 9:30 = a quick shave so as to not offend someone with hairy legs the first time I meet them.  Essentially a fail as I failed to notice my bleeding knee) She had me fill out some quick surveys and took some of my info.  Then it was on to goal setting.

Uh, if I knew there was a Q & A about important/seemingly easy things like goals, I would have come up with something beforehand!

Durh, durh, durh.  That's the sound of my brain moving slowly trying to make something up.  haha I made 2 long term goals.  1 was to make exercise and regular part of my life and 2 was to try exercises that are out of my comfort zone.  After some more Q&A it was out to the "floor".

She asked if I would rather focus on cardio equipment or weight equipment.  I've done most of the treadmills and bikes and honestly a lot of other things (rowing machines, stair climbers, etc) were full.  I said weight machines because they are kind of confusing (Where does my foot go?  How do I move this seat?) And she set me up on a system that tracks all of my weight machine reps and settings.  So when I go to a machine and type in my number, it will tell me the settings of the seat, the number of reps I should do, and the weight I should have it at!  Wow technology!  I set an appointment for 2 weeks out too (uh, I love the Y -- this is free!)

After our appt, I knew I wanted to do more activity, but like I said yesterday, the morning is SO busy at the Y!  I drove home, and knew the conditions were perfect (aka slightly windy, overcast and cool, but not cold) I left my stuff in the car, grabbed my watch out of my bag and headed out for my nearly 1 mile route.  Does anyone else feel weird when they do weights?  Like tired, but still energized?  Instead of starting C25K AGAIN, I decided run at a good rate for as long as I felt comfortable, as opposed to set 1:00 run, 1:30 rest x 8 (which would end up to be more than my mile).  My first run time was 1:15 and by the end I pushed myself to 1:30.  It felt great!  I chose to note the time that I started on my mile and just time the instances where I was running.  Overall, I was hoping for 18 mins, which was a previous PR of walking (haha so slow compared to any running bloggers!).  I ended up doing my mile in 16 minutes!  And 6:29 of that was running! Holla!

There were only 2 things I would have done differently.  1) Body Glide.  Dear God, this is why people mostly PLAN runs, not so much impromptu.  2) Worn my earbuds to make people think I was listening to music.  This lady checking her mailbox said something to me which I replied "Hi", which obviously was not the right response :)  Then she said something about joining me.  lol I can't hear anything over my heavy breathing!  I walked a couple of minutes cool down and could not bring myself to foam roll.  Getting on the floor might mean not getting back up!  Here are some pics!

16 minutes!  Sorry my hand looks deformed!
I'm a spiller!
Yeah my family always chides me about spilling stuff.  Especially on my boobs.  Can't help it!

After that I picked my dearest SwimTot up from preschool and we went for a swim!  Loove her and I love swimming!  I forgot to pick up a towel from the front desk, so we headed back out and found my brother at the Subway in the Y!  Apparently SwimSis had forgotten to tell him I was going to pick her up today.  Eek!

This evening I babysat for a while and just chilled at home.  SwimSis&Co went to Starbucks.  Which is silly.  She doesn't really like anything but hot coffee.  She got a frappacuino (sry for my spelling!) and she swore it tasted like straight milk, which she hates.  Of course I couldn't say no.

Super photogenic...

Now I've got to get caught up -- on my blog reading!  (You know how some ladies have to watch their "shows", like soap operas?  I think that's what blogs are to me) I am only 1 day behind now.  Imagine that, while I had a job, I kept up my blog reading and now that I don't have a job, I'm behind :)
